What does Future-Ready Core Mean?
"The Future-Ready Core will help ensure that students graduate with the academic foundation they need for success in the global economy," State Board of Education Chairman Howard Lee said. "The Core gives students the ability to tailor course concentrations to fit their interests and goals - including opportunities for college level work - while building a strong academic foundation."

Why do I even need to go to school after high school?
A high school diploma is no longer the ticket to a good paying job. The changing job market requires employees with advanced technical, communication, and problemsolving skills. So, to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with a decent paying job, additional training is required.
Should I take a foreign language?
If you are planning to go directly to a state 4-year institution, you will be required to have two credits in a foreign language. However, a foreign language such as Spanish could be very beneficial in a number of careers including health care, construction, public service, education, etc.
What happens if I have completed the interest inventories and other tests and I still don't know what I want to do?
Talk to your guidance counselor or see one of the career counselors for information on possible internships/apprenticeships. These opportunities will give you a brief look into different areas. That might help you narrow your focus. Don't feel badly, it is estimated that most workers will change jobs at least seven times in their lifetime.
I am interested in going into an Engineering career. Which Course of Study do I need to sign up for and what are some recommended classes?
With Future-Ready Core, students should be prepared to either go to a four-year or twoyear post secondary institution. You should choose elective and core classes that relate to your future interest.
Is Chemistry a good class to take if I want to enter the Heath Care profession?
Yes, Chemistry is a great class to take and you may, in addition to electives in the Health Science cluster, want to take Anatomy and other higher level math and science classes.
What if I am interested in ROTC?
ROTC classes are available at each high school and are a good way to explore military careers.
What about high school credit?
When both high school and college credit is earned for one course, high schools award elective credit, no specific subject/course requirement credit.
What's the difference between Dual Enrollment and Afternoon College?
Dual Enrollment is when high school students are enrolled and registered in regular day or evening college classes.To dual enroll, students must present a completed Dual Enrollment recommendation form. Forms are available in the high school guidance office or in the A-B Tech Admissions Office. Afternoon College classes are scheduled on the A-B Tech main campus during the 3rd and 4th periods of the high school day.The majority of those attending Afternoon College classes are students from area high schools. Recommendation forms are not required, but students must meet prerequisite requirements. Both programs are tuition-free, but students are required to purchase textbooks.
How do I know if I'm ready for college while still in high school?
Only qualified students will be allowed to take advantage of the opportunities mentioned in this brochure. High school students enrolling in college classes must meet the same prerequisite course requirements as regular college students. College classes are rigorous and typically require additional out-of-class tome to complete assignments. Parents, high school guidance counselors, and college representatives can help you make this decision.
What is the College Transfer Program?
High school students can gain tuition-free college credits to use as baccalaureate credits to four-year colleges and universities or begin earning their Associate in Arts or Science degrees. A-B Tech offers courses or degrees that will transfer to all North Carolina community colleges and 16 colleges and universities of the UNC system. Students who complete their general education core at A-B Tech can transfer to UNC institutions having met all lower-division general education requirements. A college transcript is an official report of a student's college career.
How do I enroll for the tuition free credit courses?
For all programs discussed in this brochure, you will need to discuss enrollment with your high school counselor or advisor. They will help you make sure that you are on track to complete your graduation requirements and will assist you with enrollment in these programs.
